The First National Bank of Dieterich sponsored a successful 1st Annual Taste of Teutopolis fundraiser for Catholic Heart Work Camp on January 14. The event raised a net profit of $11,000 which will help pay for the total cost of the trip, which is $38,000, for at least 75 kids and chaperones to participate in this year's mission trip.
The event was very well attended at the Knights of Columbus hall in Teutopolis. Guest Chefs' from the community cooked up their best recipes and offered "tastings" to attendees. Entertainment was provided by local talent at the event.
The start of the annual pilgrimage for the 39th March for Life by people from the Newton, Effingham, and Shumway areas was delayed on Friday night, January 20 because of the freezing rain and icy roads. Over 100 teens and adults had to spend the night sleeping on the floor of the Effingham K of C Hall. On Saturday morning, 2 busses from Jerseyville and Maryville joined the travelers and after several detours, all 4 busloads finally arrived in our nation's capital, Washington DC around 3 a.m. Sunday morning.
The National Trail Conference Tournament Championship was filled with intensity on Saturday, January 28 at Altamont High School between the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes and the Dieterich Movin' Maroons. Teutopolis and Dieterich defeated St. Elmo and St. Anthony, respectively, to compete in the championship of the tournament. This championship being the last for the Wooden Shoes because they are leaving the conference and the first for the Movin' Maroons.
The Teutopolis Grade School Spelling Bee winners were: 1st place Madison Magee and 2nd place Colton Starwalt.
On Tuesday, November 8, 2011 the Teutopolis Educational Foundation (TEF) and Joe's Pizza hosted a Spaghetti Supper in conjunction with the grade school's book fair. TEF and Joe's served 1,111 meals to help raise funds for the foundation. TEF awarded book grants to the top 3 classrooms represented at the spaghetti supper. Mrs. Micenheimer's 4th grade class was awarded $150 in books, Mrs. Drees' 1st grade class was awarded $100 in books, and Mrs. Smith's Kindergarten class was awarded $50 in books.
Area residents from Effingham, Sigel, Neoga, Mason, and Teutopolis met with Congressman John Shimkus on January 23 while in Washington D.C. for the March for Life.
