EAST PEORIA-There were runs aplenty Thursday as the Canton Lady Giants varsity team defeated East Peoria in Mid Illini conference play 10-6.  The Lady Giants are now 3-5 on the season, 1-2 in the conference.

Karli Walker put the visitors on the board in the first inning with a solo homerun over the left center field fence.  The Lady Giants never lost the lead from that point on.

“We got back on track today in the hit column. We had several hits in some key moments throughout the game. Everyone contributed today;  offensively and/or defensively.  It was a nice team win,” said Coach Barnes.

Elizabeth Rosich got the win in what was her first varsity start.  She lasted six and a third innings, allowing nine hits and six runs while striking out one.

“Elizabeth did a nice job today.  She was able to get herself out of a couple tough situations with a defense behind her that made most of their plays,” Said Barnes.

Blair Jacobus threw the final two-thirds of the last inning in relief.  Jacobus entered the game with bases loaded and only one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. The first batter she faced popped up to Canton catcher, Nico Grisolano, and she struck out the next batter to end the game and earn the save.

The Lady Giants had 11 hits on the night.  Jacobus, Walker, Grisolano, and Mackenzie Hedges all had two hits apiece with Walker hitting the homerun and Grisolano hitting a double.  Sophie Oaks, Allison Mortland and Anna Reinmann also contributed with one hit apiece.  Jacobus batted in three runs with Walker and Reinmann also knocking in multiple runs for the Giants.  Jacobus also stole two bases while Tori Oaks and Karli Walker each stole one.

The girls return to action Monday, April 16 at home for a make-up game against Metamora at 430 p.m.
