The Canton seventh grade girls lost a heartbreaker to Normal Parkside 29-25 before defeating Galesburg Lombard 41-17.


Against Parkside, Canton jumped out to an 11-4 lead after the first quarter, only to see the visiting Lady Pythons cut the deficit to 17-15 by halftime. The third quarter would be a low scoring one as both teams managed just four points, allowing the Lady Giants to maintain a 21-19 advantage.


The contest was knotted at 25-25 when Parkside took its first lead with a rebound putback with seven seconds left. The Lady Pythons then stole the inbounds pass and scored as the buzzer sounded.


Emma Hamm led Canton in scoring with nine points. Jenna Goforth had six points, while Trinity Rilea and Ella Goforth each scored three points. Ava Wenger and Rachel Parry rounded out the Lady Giant scoring with two points each.


Jena Goforth also recorded three rebounds, three steals and two assists.


The Lady Giants would bounce back in a big way against Lombard.


Canton Ingersoll seized a 9-3 lead after one quarter and expanded it to 19-9 at the half. The Lady Giants scored 14 points in the third period to up their advantage to 33-15. They would outscore the Lady Zephyrs 8-2 in the final six minutes to close out the victory.


Canton (4-3) had 10 players contribute scoring led by Rilea with eight points. Camri Phillips and Carleigh Putman scored six points each, followed by Meadow Lowder (five), Olivia Krohn and Ava Wenger (four points each) and Ella Goforth, Jenna Goforth, Hamm and Parry (two points each).


Putman also had six rebounds, Phillips three rebounds and Wenger two steals for the Lady Giants.


In eighth grade play, Canton Ingersoll opened its day by dropping a 30-27 decision to Parkside.


The Lady Giants rallied from a nine-point deficit, only to fall short at the end.


Kelsie Reneau led Canton Ingersoll with 11 points. Ryleigh Moser added seven points, followed by Lily Gilles with five and Kylie Fahnestock with four.


The Lady Giants rebounded from their early loss with a 39-17 victory over Lombard in the final game of the day.


Seven different players scored for Canton (3-4) led by Moser’s 11. Gilles added eight points, followed by Kelsie Reneau with six and Karlee Zumstein with four. Jaiden Walters, Jayda Jones and Fahnestock all chipped in two points each for the Lady Giants.


The other eighth grade game saw Parkside defeat Lombard 37-18.


Canton Ingersoll returns to action today with a pair of games at Dunlap Middle School starting at 4:15 p.m.
