Inaugural Super Hero Blue Light Fun Run/Walk addresses sexual assault

MACOMB — In order to raise awareness and funds for sexual assault and domestic abuse prevention in the community, the Western Illinois University Student Government Association (SGA) has organized an inaugural Super Hero Blue Light 5k Fun/Run to highlight WIU campus safety resources.
The Super Hero Blue Light Fun Run/Walk, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 20, will raise funds for the Western Illinois Regional Council (WIRC) Victim Services, while raising awareness about the "blue light" (emergency) call boxes located throughout campus. The 5K run/walk (or 1.5 mile walk) routes include several of WIU's 48 call boxes.
“The purpose of it is to educate our students about those resources, about the emergency call boxes and where they are located, and we have been adding some new blue lights to existing boxes while updating the graphics making them more visible,” said Madison Lynn, a sophomore accountancy major from Macomb and SGA vice president.
Lynn said the inaugural fun/run is gaining support already. “We have signed up 26 students, so far, and 15 of those students are first year experience students,” she said, and reported that $175 has been raised and their expenditures are $435 for t-shirts.
Guest speakers from WIU’s Office of Public Safety (OPS) will be speaking at the event talking about the blue light system and how it works.
“We’re going to have Stephanie Hovsepian from the Women’s Center talking about what the Women’s Center contributes towards raising awareness about sexual assault and domestic violence, there will be a WIRC representative and we’re really looking forward to having as many students there as possible,” she said.
“This is really great educational opportunity (for WIU students on campus), and it allows us to reach out to the Macomb community as well because this is a campus that the city uses, as well, and we’d really like everyone who uses WIU’s campus to know about it,” Lynn said.
Registration begins next Saturday, October 20 at 8 a.m. in front of Sherman Hall, with a short ceremony beginning at 8:30 a.m. and then run/walk begins at 9 a.m. Registration, $25 per person, can be completed at wiu.edu/bluelightfunrun. The event is open to the public. First year students enrolled in a University 100 class can participate at no cost as part of the First Year Experience Campus Community Exploration unit.
The inaugural Super Hero Blue Light 5k Fun/Run is sponsored by Citizens National Bank, WIU Women’s Center, American Family Insurance Matthew Glaser Agency, Inc., Hy-Vee and the WIU Intrafraternal Council (IFC).
