Renee Breer and Andrew Vahling were recently selected as the January Students of the Month for Teutopolis High School. Renee is a senior at THS and plans to attend college in Chicago and study biology. Andrew is also a senior and plans to attend college at the University of Illinois to pursue a degree in engineering.
The Student of the Month program is sponsored by the Teutopolis Education Foundation.
The Teutopolis Grade School Spelling Bee winners were: 1st place Madison Magee and 2nd place Colton Starwalt.
On Tuesday, November 8, 2011 the Teutopolis Educational Foundation (TEF) and Joe's Pizza hosted a Spaghetti Supper in conjunction with the grade school's book fair. TEF and Joe's served 1,111 meals to help raise funds for the foundation. TEF awarded book grants to the top 3 classrooms represented at the spaghetti supper. Mrs. Micenheimer's 4th grade class was awarded $150 in books, Mrs. Drees' 1st grade class was awarded $100 in books, and Mrs. Smith's Kindergarten class was awarded $50 in books.
For the 24th year, the National Geographic Society is holding the National Geographic Bee for students in the fourth through eighth grades in thousands of schools across the United States and in the five U.S. territories, as well as in Department of Defense Dependents Schools around the world. The 2012 Bee is sponsored by Google.
In an effort to spread kindness during this holiday season TGS 3rd grade students went Christmas caroling on Thursday, December 8. The students walked along both sides of Main Street and stopped in many of the local businesses to sing a Christmas song.
Instead of having a holiday gift exchange this year, the Sixth Grade Class at Teutopolis Grade School decided to use the money they would have spent on each other to help those who are not as lucky as they are. The project started with a special presentation from Karen Luchtefeld from Fish Human Services who informed students about how the charity helps the poor and just how many people in our Effingham County are in need. This Christmas it was 600 families.
Seniors, Nicholas Grunloh and Whitney Kuhl were chosen as Students of the Month for December. These individuals were nominated by the Teutopolis High School faculty members based on their academic effort, attitude/respect, fairness/caring, participation/contribution, responsibility and service. The nominations are also based on a student's willingness to work hard, demonstration of pride in self and school the helping of others and participation in school extracurricular activities. This award is sponsored by the Teutopolis Education Foundation.
On Friday, December 9, Mrs. Mette's 3rd grade homeroom had a chance to learn first-hand about entrepreneurship. Tyler Goeckner and Valerie Deters, students in the CEO class, came to talk about how many businesses are started because of entrepreneurs. Their Social Studies textbook discusses how entrepreneurs established businesses in St. Louis during the mid-1800's, which helped St. Louis to grow during the westward expansion.
6th grade students delivered 10 boxes of books to the FISH/Catholic Charities Christmas Store. After hearing a presentation from Karen Luchtefeld, president of Fish, about the services Fish provides to the poor, a group of 6th grade students decided they could help by organizing a book drive. Sparked by the spirit of giving, students enthusiastically organized the project entirely on their own.
After the book drive, students sorted and delivered their donations to the Christmas Store. They were given a brief tour of the store to experience just how important charity organizations are for less fortunate families at Christmas.

High Honor Roll:
On Friday, November 4, the fourth grade class went on a field trip, compliments of Charles Heuerman Trucking Company, to their gravel pit near Greenup and their stone quarry near Casey. The students have been working on an Earth Science unit and the experiences of the day made the words in the textbook become truly meaningful!
The fifth grade students at Teutopolis Grade School were honored to have seven veterans from the Teutopolis American Legion Post tell their stories about their experiences in the military: Philip Mette, U.S. Marine Corp.; Jim Esker, Army; Ken Hardiek, Army; Tony Schumacher, Navy; Ron Esker, Army; Christina Ordner, Air Force; and Corey Dasenbrock, Army and Army Reserves.
After hearing a presentation by Karen Luchtefeld from FISH Humane Services, some sixth grade students asked if TGS could help out FISH Christmas Store by collecting new or slightly used books. The book collection will be held November 28 through December 1. All books can be placed in the box outside the TGS Office.

The Teutopolis Grade School annual Food For the Needy collection has begun. For every 100 items collected, one of Tom Turkey's feathers will be plucked! It doesn't look good for Tom!

Recipients of the Eastern Illinois University Alumni Association's 2011 alumni awards were honored Saturday, Oct. 22, in conjunction with Homecoming activities.
The Outstanding Young Alumnus Award went to Jake Byrne '07, '09 of Long Island City, N.Y. In addition, Tim '71, '72 and Vickie Burke '72, '75 of Evanston received the Louis V. Hencken Alumni Service Award, and Craig Lindvahl '79 of Effingham received the Distinguished Educator Award.
Mrs. Swinderman, Mrs. Yallaly and a few volunteers from the TJHS Book/Library Club wrapped up a successful Scholastic Book Fair on Friday, September 30. With the support of students, staff, Farmweld, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brummer, the library exceeded its ambitious goal of $1300 by $4.55! Thank you to all parents who supplied book-spending money! Your generosity purchased 70 new titles for our junior high book collection. New books will become available for circulation during the week of Oct 10-14.
Teutopolis High School is pleased to announce this year's fall musical is "Musical! The Bard is Back!" Performance dates are October 21-23 in the Teutopolis Grade School Auditorium. Tickets are on sale at the THS office.
The students of Hilltop High are excited! They're going to put on a musical of "Romeo and Juliet." However, the director, Miss Peggy Donahue, pressed into service by a principal eager to please his superintendent, is horrified.
