The Crossroads Beekeepers held their first meeting on August 9 at Joe Sippers with eight in attendance. At the meeting were three area beekeepers and others interested in learning more about raising bees for both pollination and honey. Larry Quicksall, organizer of the club, brought in one of his honey supers with eight full frames of honey that he recently harvested from one of his hives. He also shared a taste of the sweet reward for being a beekeeper. Quicksall remarked, "I can get a little over a quart of honey from each frame, so these eight frames should yield about two and a half gallons of honey."

The Crossroads Beekeepers has three levels of membership, "Beekeepers" who actually have bees, "Bee Feeders" who plant and tend gardens that are bee-friendly, and "Bee Friends" who are interested in learning more about honeybees. The assembled group discussed topics for future meetings and having members available to speak at local schools.

Crossroads Beekeepers will meet next on Monday, September 13, at Joe Sippers in Effingham from 6:30-8:00 p.m. For more information on Crossroads Beekeepers contact Larry Quicksall at 217-347-5937.
