John Joseph Thoele, 84, of Pawnee died peacefully on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at 9:25 a.m. at St. Joseph's Home in Springfield.
He was born February 25, 1926, in Chicago, the son of Lawrence and Frances Weis Thoele. John attended parochial schools in Chicago, graduating early from high school to join the Army Air Force. He served with the occupation forces in Europe and was recalled during the Korean War, serving in the state of Washington.
He married Dolores Buescher at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Teutopolis, IL, on January 24, 1953. The family moved to Pawnee in 1960. He was a 40-year member of St. Mary's parish in Pawnee and more recently St. Mary's in Farmersville. John was an electrician and member of IBEW Local #489 and #193, retiring in 1988 after 36 years. In his retirement he found "the perfect job" as a carpenter with the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis at their motherhouse complex in Springfield. He enjoyed his work, found peace in the surroundings and made another circle of friends. Failing health forced him to leave St. Francis after 15 years.
John enjoyed fine dining, dancing, travel, time with his grandchildren, cold beer and Gabatoni's pizza. His dry sense of humor will be missed, but it lives on in his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Dolores; daughters, Jennifer Ericson of Pawnee and Susan Thoele of Springfield; sons, Gregory Thoele of Springfield and Daniel (Regina) Thoele of Athens. There are eight grandchildren, Nicholas, Lauren, Anna and Matthew of Springfield; Alaina and Abigail of Athens; Patricia Ericson and Karen (Kent) Olson of Pawnee; and two great-granddaughters, Sydney and Sarah Olson of Pawnee. John also leaves nieces, nephews, cousins, and a large family of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Aubrey.
His family greeted friends, following a prayer service from 4:00-7:00 p.m., on Sunday, May 2, at Staab Polk Memorial Home in Chatham. His funeral service was held on Monday, May 3 at St. Joseph Home Chapel, 3306 S. 6th Street Road in Springfield at 10:00 a.m. with Father Charles Dahlby officiating. Burial followed at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors were given by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
In lieu of flowers or food, memorials may be made to the St. Joseph's Home Canopy Campaign at the above address, zip 62703.
