Arthur J. Schleper, 85, of Effingham, died at 6:30 a.m. on March 31, 2010, at Evergreen Nursing Center in Effingham.
Art was born on April 15, 1924 in Teutopolis, the son of Frank and Florence (Feuerborn) Schleper. He married Marion Rottsalk of North Aurora, Illinois in 1949, with whom he raised their two children. She preceded him in death in 1982. He married Catherine Goeckner of Effingham in 1984. She survives. Also surviving are 1 son, Kevin (Cathryn) Schleper of Davis, Illinois; 1 daughter, Kathy (Allen) Marquardt of Urbana, Illinois; and 2 grandsons, John Marquardt and James Marquardt, both of Urbana.
Art served in the U.S. Army in World War II and was held as a prisoner of war in Germany for several months. After the war he lived in Aurora, Illinois, for 40 years, where he worked as a lineman for Commonwealth Edison. After retiring he returned to the area he loved, moving to Effingham in 1985.
Art enjoyed golf, the company of others, traveling, and spending time with his family.
A memorial Mass was held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 5, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis. A burial service with military rites followed at St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation was from 9:00 a.m. until service time in St. Clare Hall at the Church.
