Irene M. Bergfeld Sandschafer, 90, of Teutopolis, passed away at 3:50 a.m. on Monday, August 31, 2009 at Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Effingham.
Irene was born on June 28, 1919 in rural Dieterich to Herman and Kathryn M. "Kate" Westendorf. She married George L. Bergfeld on August 31, 1941 and he preceded her in death in 1987.
Irene worked at Martin's IGA for 30 years as a cashier clerk. She belonged to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis and the St. Francis Council of Catholic Women.
Survivors include her son, Daniel Bergfeld of Monticello; 5 daughters, Kathleen (Steve) French of Effingham, Pat (Carroll) Lotz of St. Peter, Diana Marquis of Mt. Zion, Janie (Tim) Swofford of Decatur, and Connie Bergfeld of Teutopolis; brother, Vincent (Catherine) Westendorf of Effingham; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, George L. Bergfeld; one grandchild, Scott; one daughter-in-law, Becky; one infant grandchild and 3 infant great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, September 4, 2009 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Teutopolis with burial at St. Francis Cemetery in Teutopolis. Visitation was from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Friday morning. Bauer Funeral Home in Teutopolis was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center activity department.
