Arthur Halfar, 90, of Teutopolis died at 3:17 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at his home in Teutopolis.
Art was born on December 16, 1919 in Franklin County to Wenzel and Louise (Rettek) Halfar. He married Dorothy R. Dinan on June 21, 1943 and she survives him.
He taught 8th grade and high school math at Unit 40 schools in Effingham. After retiring from teaching, he worked for 9 years as a security guard at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital.
Art was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Teutopolis, the Holy Name Society, the Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Council #2874, life member of V.F.W. Post #1769 in Effingham, American Legion Post #924 in Teutopolis, St. Francis singers, the St. Francis monastery museum committee, past member of the ECCOA board of directors, past member president and board of directors of the Midland Area Agency on Aging, National Trail Square Dance Club, and he served on the local military funeral rites details.
Art served in the U.S. Army for over 4 years during World War II and then served for 2 more years as a first lieutenant during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Teutopolis; 3 sons, Stephen (wife Kathy) of Champaign, Gregory (wife Roisin) of St. Louis, Missouri, and Nathan of Mahomet; 3 daughters, Christine Halfar (husband Douglas Goodfriend) of Connecticut, Elizabeth (Marc) Berezin of Alaska, and Teresa Halfar (husband Marty Ern) of Champaign; 12 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 son, Peter; 3 brothers; and 1 sister.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Teutopolis with burial at St. Francis Cemetery with military graveside rites. The Visitation was from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the church with a 7:00 p.m. parish wake service. Bauer Funeral Home in Teutopolis was in charge of arrangements.
