Herman H. Tegeler, 91, of Effingham passed away at 5:54 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2009 at the Lutheran Care Center in Altamont.
Herman was born on June 19, 1918 in Effingham County to Joseph and Ann (Lohman) Tegeler. He married Mary E. Unkraut on February 16, 1949.
He was a lifelong farmer and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. He was a lifetime V.F.W. #1769 member, a member of the Teutopolis American Legion Post #924, and a lifetime precinct committee member for Douglas Township. He belonged to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lillyville.
Survivors include his wife, Mary of Effingham; 1 son, Jim (Pat) Tegeler of Effingham; 1 daughter, Karen (Dale) Hakman of Effingham; 3 grandchildren, Kristie (Brian) Scheidegger of St. Charles, MO, Monica Tegeler of St. Louis, MO, and Eric (Heather) of Trenton; 1 great-grandchild, Amber Scheidegger; and 1 sister, Philomena Romack of Neoga.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Albert, Bernard, and Joseph; and 3 sisters, Agnes, Mary and Rose.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lillyville with burial at the Sacred Heart Cemetery with military graveside rites. The visitation was from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with a 6:00 p.m. parish wake service at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lillyville or to the Lutheran Care Center in Altamont.
