Raymond H. "Ray" Petzing, 93, of Effingham, passed away at 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
Ray was born on September 21, 1916 in rural Altamont to Edward and Alvina (Hoese) Petzing. He married Rose Marie Dust on July 24, 1948 and she preceded him in death in 1996.
Ray was an operator of Wabash Independent Oil in Effingham. He also operated a gas station in Teutopolis for 23 years before that. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church in Effingham, Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Council #2874, and the Effingham American Legion Post #120.
Ray served with the Army Air Force during World War II.
Survivors include his 2 sons, William R. of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Louis A. (wife Christine) of Galesburg; 1 brother, Harold Petzing of Altamont; and 1 sister, Esther Berg of Champaign.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; 1 son, Charles E.; 1 sister, Martha Engel; and 1 sister-in-law, Hazel Petzing.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 14 at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Effingham with burial at St. Anthony Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation was from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham.
