To The Voters of Cumberland County:
In 2004 Cumberland County residents voted to place taxing bodies in the county under the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law (P-TELL or "Tax Caps"). This does not limit taxes to zero but does limit them to no more than 3 percent increase or the rate of inflation whichever is less and allows new construction or development to also be included.
The law seems to be working fairly well as it has allowed an increase in taxes to account for inflation but has helped to control runaway taxes.
The Cumberland County Board however feels more taxes are needed. They have placed a proposal on the February 2nd ballot that asks voters if P-TELL should be abolished. The proposal seems to be a bit misleading but it reads like this: "Shall the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law (35 ILCS 200/18-185 through 35 ILCS 200/18-245), which limits annual property tax extension increases, apply to non-home rule taxing districts with all or a portion of their equalized assessed valuation located in Cumberland County? Yes No "
If you wish Cumberland County taxing bodies to continue to operate within the limits of P-TELL or "Tax Caps" then you need to vote "yes" on this proposition.
Please remember that this is a non partisan issue. You do not have to call for either a Democrat or Republican ballot in order to vote on this issue.
