BIGGSVILLE –– You might remember him as a basketball player at Williamsfield High School or as a varsity girls basketball coach at Wethersfield High School.

Nonetheless, Shane Tucker is digging into a new role as the Assistant Principal/Athletic Director at West Central High School.

“I’m really excited,” Tucker said last Friday. “I wanted to move over to that administration opportunity and get to work with Mr. (Jason) Kirby. I think it is going to be a great opportunity for me and I think he’ll be easy to work with. We have worked pretty well together so far in the couple of days I have been at West Central. I just want to make a positive difference over at West Central.”

Tucker gained valuable experience in coaching 14 years at Gardner South Wilmington High School, serving as the varsity girls basketball coach for three years and then coaching the varsity boys basketball team for eight years. His run of coaching varsity girls hoops at Wethersfield featured five years.

Overall as a varsity basketball coach, Tucker said he has close to 200 wins.

Tucker, however, wanted to get into administration and is not going to coach for the Heat. He’s just looking forward to his new role at West Central as the A.D./Assistant Principal.

Tucker said growing up in Williamsfield he was lucky to have Bobby Anderson as a mentor and then former Gardner South Wilmington coach Jim Fair.

“We worked together over the years both as teachers at the same high school and then we coached together,” said Fair, who coached over 33 years. “I followed him after when he went to Wethersfield and we remained in touch. Our teams played against each other once a year and I think he put together a couple of 20-win seasons back-to-back, and I think he was looking forward to some more of them. He had worked with the girls (at Wethersfield) and had gotten the program to where it was in a good place. He had some great kids coming back and everyone kind of knew how they wanted to play. He moved forward and that’s the world. If he takes on a task, you can pretty much consider it successfully done.”

Fair continued, “He was well invested into our community. He moved back and it was their gain and our loss.”

Gardner South Wilmington High School is located halfway between Joliet and Pontiac.

A 1995 graduate of Williamsfield High School, Tucker said he was a “role player” on the basketball team and was a teammate of Billtown legend Travis Lewis for two years. Tucker went on to play three years of basketball at Eureka College.

Tucker, a big fan of Chicago pro teams, is sure to leave his mark in the Biggsville area.

New WHS girls coach

Tucker’s departure meant an opening as the head girls basketball coach at Wethersfield. The new head coach is expected to be named at tonight’s school board meeting.
