St. Mary's will be playing for a regional championship after knocking off top-seed and tournament host Dwight in the semifinal round of the IESA Class 1A softball meet.
SMS will play for the championship on Wednesday against the winner of the Seneca-Lockport Kelvin Grove game today.
The Saints, seeded fourth, edged the Redbirds 3-2 after having to hold off the tourney favorites late. SMS scored two runs in the top of the first inning and added a run in the third for a 3-1 lead. Dwight scored in the second and fifth innings.
Elena Krause allowed just two hits and walked six to go with 14 strikeouts in picking up the win. Krause also had two base hits at the plate.
Kate Leonard had a hit and drove in two runs and Bailey Masching had a run batted in.
St. Michael Regional
Host Streator St. Michael used an eight-run inning to push past Flanagan and into the championship game of its own regional with a 13-7 decision Monday.
The Flacons scored first with a run in the top of the first inning. St. Michael rsponded with two in the bottom of the frame and then eight in the second to take control.
Cheyenne Bruns had two hits and drove in a run for the Falcons. Kortney Harms had a hit and three RBIs. Raegan Montello and Grace Zimmerman each drove in a run.
Harms took the loss in the circle and Burns also pitched. Each had three strikeouts.
Warriors fall to Coal City
Pontiac will be hosting the junior high baseball regional beginning today, but the Warriors are entering the postseason with a 7-1 loss to Coal City on Monday.
The Warriors will take on Prairie Central at the Rec-Plex today at 6:30 p.m.
Camden Fenton drove in the only Pontiac run against Coal City. Dalton Tovrea, Sam Edinger, Zayn Eilts and Carter Dronenberg shared pitching duties.
